MLPLBA hosted the William D. Reed Club Triples Tournament on Saturday, June 21. Twelve players participated. Mindful of the win and plus points they would need to achieve in their final game, the team of Max Cavender, Anna Witt, and Matt de St. Aubin just managed to pull ahead of Carl Landgren, Jim Grzybowski, and Jacob Blundon to claim victory. Third place went to Crandall Hays, Mark Mathwig, and Brian Schieble. This was the first tournament for new members, Matt and Jacob.
MLPLBA purchased a new gas grill, much to the delight of the participants of the new Thursday Night Corporate League. At 5:30 pm, these enthusiastic players gather for a Happy Hour and then bowl at 7:00 pm.
Sixteen bowlers participated in this highly competitive tournament, held on June 7 and 8, 2014. 1st place went to Bob Schneider and Rob Behncke, who also won in 2013. Steve Nelson and Carl Landgren, who have a knack for winning in even years (2002, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012) came in 2nd place. Max Cavender and John Kirkwood finished in 3rd place. Novice bowler, Kirk Korneisel, made his tournament debut. Leif Andresen served as tournament director.
Ten MLPLBA members introduced forty guests to the sport of Bowls at the Open House on Sunday, May 25, 2014. This was the largest guest turnout in recent years. Our next Open House is scheduled for Friday, June 20, 2014 from 5-9 pm.
MLPLBA hosted the Butler Blind Pairs tournament on May 24,2014. Twenty bowlers participated on this beautiful Saturday at Lake Park. The championship game came down to the top ranked skip and lead (John Kirkwood and Dave Olsen) vs. the second ranked skip and lead (Rob Behncke and Alice Sedgewick). Kirkwood/Olsen won. Scott Wisniewski (skip) and Jack Britton (lead) won over the rest of the field to secure third place and the accompanying prize money. This is Kirkwood’s second consecutive Blind Pairs win. Tournament director, Rob Behncke, thanks all those who helped make the day run smoothly with set up and take down, rolling the green, computer scoring, taking and running lunch orders, and organizing check-ins in the morning.
Milwaukee represented well at the 2013 National Championships, hosted by the Santa Anita Lawn Bowling Green Club in Arcadia CA, October 16-20. Anna Witt (skip) and Rebecca Nguyen (lead) won gold with a record of 6-1 in the Womens Pairs competition. Meanwhile, Bob Schneider (skip) and Rob Behncke (lead) won silver with a record of 5-2 in the Mens Pairs competition. Pat Wimmer particpated in the Womens Singles competition and Steven Nelson pulled out a 3rd place finish in the Mens Singles competition with a record of 4-3.
The Chili Bowl Touranament was held on October 12, 2013. Twelve bowlers participated. They were divided into two teams and competed against each other in triples, pairs, and singles events. First place went to the team of Bob Schneider, Joe Zinna, John Kirkwood, Jim Grzybowski, Pat Wimmer, and Dat Nguyen. Thank you to Leif Andresen for serving as Tournament Director.
The Veteran/Novice Pairs tournament was played on September 14th. There was a great turnout with 16 participants divided into 8 teams. The teams were split into two pools of 4 playing a round robin. The winners of each pool advanced to a playoff final. Anna Witt and Sue Dropp (pictured left) triumphed over Crandall Hays and Viki Olsen in the final to win the tournament.
